Don’t lose your moral compass. Be sure that you are totally okay with all of the decisions you make. Do not make a decision you’ll later regret. Some may disagree with you, but you should always do what you think is right.

Focus on the individuals in your team, and you will lead them to success. Learn how you can best inspire and encourage those who are working with you. Rather than focusing so much on making sure every single task gets done, put your energy into motivating your team to do their best.

When you are a leader, it is important that they know regularly they are appreciated. It doesn’t take much time to say thank you, or write a “good job” note, but it means a lot to a person who is going through a long work day. You can increase company loyalty for free with just a few words.

Prepare yourself thoroughly prior to meeting with the team. In your mind, come up with all the possible questions that could be asked. Then, come up with answers for each of these questions. If you have the right answers, your team will admire you. It will also save a lot of valuable time.

You must own mistakes you make. Even good leaders make errors. The great leaders are the ones who can own their mistakes and work to fix them. Doing this lets others know that you are only human and make mistakes just as everyone else does. It is okay even for leaders, and it will gain respect and loyalty.

When choosing people to work for you, try to hire diverse people. Having different educations, ages and cultures can give you different perspectives. Do not hire employees who are similar to you. Doing so can put a limit on innovation. You may also cause your company to fail, due to your weaknesses.

Always try to listen more than talk. Being a good leader requires you to listen to what other people have to say. Listen to everything your employees need to say. This includes their problems with you. Listen to them so you can learn from the employees what they think about your products and the buyers, as well. You will be shocked at what you learn by listening.

Built in 2010, Haven for Hope was credited last year for reducing homelessness in San Antonio by 80 percent. According to an article in The Boston Globe, since its creation, more than 3,000 men, women and children have been placed in permanent housing after participating in Haven for Hope’s programs. The facility also offers sleeping space that can accommodate hundreds of people at a time. “I think that is within our reach,” Rapid City Police Chief Karl Jegeris said Tuesday during a news conference at the former National American University building in Rapid City. Jegeris was part of the group that visited Haven For Hope. “We need to set that as our bar. We need to work collaboratively to reduce homelessness by 80 percent in Rapid City. And it can be done,” he said. Also on the Texas trip was Ruby Gibson, director of Freedom Lodge, a local nonprofit that provides historical trauma therapy primarily to members of Rapid City’s Native American community. “They work from a place of ‘radical compassion,'” Gibson said. “It requires a change of thinking, it requires a unification rather than a division of race, where we look at each other in a different way, where we all share the same community, and that one person’s suffering, or one person’s joy, is another person’s joy.” Albert Linderman, director of Rapid City Collective Impact, said he was impressed with what he saw at Haven for Hope. “We were as a group in agreement that this was a powerful display of humanity and intelligence,” Linderman said. “The group of us got a vision for Rapid City.” The next step for realizing that vision, Linderman said, is for Rapid City Collective Impact and various community stakeholders to begin creating a strategic plan in the weeks ahead to hammer out potential costs and possible locations of facilities.

When you’re a leader, you have to know that trust is something you earn. Individuals who collaborate with you will not trust you automatically, but they’ll learn to trust your judgment over time if you are honest and make solid decisions. Work to build trust with all of your peers.
